Join me (Vanessa), Hannah and Fionna for our conversation about IBD during different stages of schooling. Between the three of us, we have lived experiences with both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, with being diagnosed at different life stages (during early education and in high school) and with balancing high school, college and grad school with IBD.

In episode 30 you'll hear our experiences with IBD & key learnings from high school, college, and grad school

We talk a lot about accommodations and open communication and how we've used these things to work with our teachers to balance taking care of our selves and our health, with continuing to move forward with our educations.

"Other than the SAT, I don’t think I’ve had to use accommodations. But it’s definitely helpful to have the option just in case something does happen." - Hannah

"Another recommendation I have, and something that I’ve done, is doctor offices have standard letters they will send but they’re often willing to customize them. So, I’ll just myChart message my doctor to make sure X,Y & Z are included in the letter for my accommodations." - Fionna

We chat openly about our experiences with switching medications, transitioning to adult care, being gluten free at school, going back to school after surgery, listening to our bodies and accepting that sometimes we can't do it all. We share the tips and tricks that have worked for us and some of our funny IBD/school stories (like meds accidentally getting sent to Trader Joe's, asking for a history textbook upon waking up from anesthesia, and relating j-pouch surgery to knee surgery). We hope you'll listen to episode 30 of imPACt
