Meet Antonio and read his story about growing up with Crohn's and how it has evolved from a burden into something that is inspiring a future career in medicine.
I am originally from Marietta, but am currently at college in Milledgeville, GA. I am a pre-medical student with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry. Growing up with Crohn's disease is a big reason why I want to work in the medical field one day. I discovered ImproveCareNow through my gastroenterologist after I asked how I could get more involved with GI-related studies. Along with my studies, I am also the Men's Club Lacrosse team President. I am also involved with Greek life, and I work in a research lab studying neurology.
The biggest challenge I faced with Crohn’s was getting over the "Why me?" aspect. I never understood why I was the one with the problems and was going through the burdens associated with Crohn's disease. What gets me through is seeing it as a gift.
I did not know what I wanted to be (when I got older) or what I wanted to study, so I looked at the things that set me apart. Crohn's is one of those things and it ultimately inspired me to want to work in the medical field since I can connect with it personally. I also believe that everything happens for a reason.
Dealing with Crohn's disease was the first time I really had to face adversity, and it made me realize that anyone is capable of doing anything if they put their mind to it. No one is perfect and that's okay. Crohn’s taught me that it is not bad to be different, and you do not need to hide the real you. If people ask, it’s okay to tell them, because they are here for you. It’s not easy doing everything alone which is why I am glad that I found this community.
I’m pretty sure I would not have learned some major life lessons if I had not gone through the struggles of living with IBD; part of me is grateful for the character development that it put me through. I feel like I could get through many health-related issues now since I have already been through it with Crohn's and I understand what it is like to be treated for a complex chronic illness.
Today, I see a lot of positive impacts in my life because of journey with Crohn's. I think it is important for young people of faith to understand that God gives his toughest battles to the strongest warriors. I want to be able to offer guidance and advice to young people with IBD; to let them know that it is going to be alright. I remember how it felt when I was young and afraid, and I had no real source of guidance. I wish I had something like this community, where I could hear motivational stories from others; I hope to be there for someone who is struggling.
